Intern Introduction: Mason Powell

Hello, my name is Mason Powell and I am one of the River Connection Interns here at Wild Rivers this summer for 2026. I am a rising junior at UW-River Falls where I major in Environmental Science with a minor in Outdoor Education. I enjoy getting outside as much as I can whether that is walking in the creek, mountain biking, or rock climbing.

How I got here

I’ve chosen to work for the Conservancy this summer because of their broad reach and connection within the local communities and watershed as a whole. I find it an incredible opportunity to be able to join this organization and inspire people to protect our beautiful rivers either through field trips teaching kids about macroinvertebrates through mucking; public events where we help people discover the joy and beauty we have on the St. Croix and Namekagon through kayaking trips.

My summer internship goals

I have often been asked what I am most excited for or what I want to take away from my internship this summer. I never know what exactly to say just because there is a very broad net I can answer under. I know that I am most excited just to be outside as much as humanly possible this summer as the outdoors is my happy place. What I want to take away from my internship is tricky, as there is a whole lot I want to soak up and learn. I do know I want to become stronger and develop my skills with leading field trips but I also want to learn more about the outdoor recreation programs this summer. I think this internship at Wild Rivers this summer is a perfect fit for me because I get to blend both of my career interests together and can learn how to mix them together.
