Day Hikes
If you’d prefer to stay dry and experience the Riverway from land, there are also plenty of great hiking opportunities throughout the watershed. Here are three hikes that the Conservancy loves to explore throughout the seasons.
Ridge View Trail – Osceola Loop
This NPS managed scenic two mile hiking trail is located a short distance from the Conservancy’s own backyard in Osceola, WI. Depending on what season you visit in, you’ll be met with snow covered pines, blooming wildflowers, lush creekside hills, or the crunch of leaves underfoot. As you begin hiking you’ll follow a narrow stream on its way to meet the St. Croix. You’ll then find yourself on high bluffs overlooking Peaslee Slough, a backwater channel frequented by a variety of bird species throughout the year. No matter when you decide to visit, there’s something for everyone to see on this great trail!

Interstate Parks Pothole Trails
There’s no better way to see the unique geology of the St. Croix than by looking at some potholes! These fascinating formations were created long ago as strong glacial melt waters forced sediment to erode the basalt in deep circular holes, and now you can see them for yourself just minutes from Taylors Falls! There are potholes to see at both Minnesota and Wisconsin State Parks. Both park’s pothole trails are about a ½ mile in length and have their own unique characteristics. At MN Interstate you’ll be able to view some more substantial potholes, and at WI Interstate you’ll get an amazing scenic view of The Dalles of the St. Croix. At the Conservancy, we love taking school groups on tours of these stunning places and seeing the wonder on kid’s faces as they peer down a pothole and back in time. Next time you’re looking for a great local hike, we hope you’ll do the same!
Standing Cedars Community Land Conservancy
Standing Cedars is a local organization dedicated to protecting land in the St. Croix Valley and ensuring it remains accessible for the public to enjoy. They have multiple tracts of land around the Osceola area that offer great hiking opportunities. A favorite of mine, and many at the Conservancy, is the Engelwood tract which has been the site of several of our First Day Hikes. On this property you’ll encounter wide ranging environments such as conifer forest, oak forest, and prairie grasslands. Similar to the Ridge View Trail, it’s worth coming back here throughout the seasons to see how dramatically things change in these different habitats. (Photo Credit: Owen Anderson)
Have fun!
We hope you’re feeling more equipped to get out and explore the outdoors in the St. Croix Valley! Remember, when travelling outdoors, always plan ahead and prepare with safety in mind. And if you’d like to come out and experience the Riverway with a group, you can find the Conservancy’s upcoming events here.
Happy trails!
