Beginner Paddle Routes and Tips
We’re lucky enough to have hundreds of miles of beautiful paddling opportunities right in our own backyard along the St. Croix and Namekagon rivers, but this also makes it a bit of a challenge to know where to begin. To help get you started, here are three great beginner friendly river stretches to get on the water this season.

Taylors Falls to Osceola Landing on the St. Croix
The stretch from Taylors Falls, MN down to Osceola Landing is a classic portion of the St. Croix River that’s easily accessible from the Twin Cities and anywhere else in the watershed. If you’re looking for the perfect starting point to experience the St. Croix, this is it.
You can choose to begin at either MN Interstate State Park or WI Interstate State Park. Starting in Wisconsin will allow you to have a better view of the region’s amazing geologic history as you paddle through the cliffs of “The Dalles of the St. Croix”. However, if you choose to start just a bit farther downstream in MN Interstate State Park, you have the ability to rent kayaks from Taylors Falls Boats with their shuttle option included.
Along this approximately 6 mile stretch of river you’ll have the chance to get out and swim from the many sand bars, see impressive clif faces, and even try to spot the ancient pictographs hidden among the rocks. If you need a place to stop for lunch, check out the picturesque Eagle’s Nest picnic area and group campsite just past Franconia Landing. There are no rapids on this section of river, but watch out for shallow water near sandbars unless you’re looking for more beach time!

Highway 70 Landing to County Road O Landing on the St. Croix
If you’re looking to get a bit more northward and into the quieter sections of the St. Croix, this is a good stretch to try out. A somewhat longer paddle at about 9 miles, this stretch is characterized by wide open bends with plenty of islands to navigate and explore as you pass by. Depending on the season and the water levels, there will be some small riffles and rapids for a fun way to practice maneuvering near obstacles. Keep an eye out for the historic cabin that’s tucked away on the shore about halfway through your paddle!
If you’re looking for a nearby shuttle service, check out Wild River Outfitters in Grantsburg, WI.

County Road K Landing to Whispering Pines Landing on the Namekagon
Of course, we can’t forget about the Namekagon! Stretching the northernmost sections of the Riverway, the Namekagon river is the St. Croix’s largest tributary and a wonderful place to paddle. This narrow and winding river has a distinct character that you have to experience yourself. Starting this section at County Road K Landing places you downstream of the Trego dam, meaning water levels remain relatively consistent throughout the seasons. You will encounter some riffles and rapids along your path (check maps for the red squiggly line across the river) as you follow the tight river bends through stands of aspen and pine. The Namekagon is a considerably shallower river than the St. Croix, allowing you to watch the rocky bottom pass by you underneath crystal clear waters. Make sure to keep watch for the shining glint of an exposed mussel shell!
